Lauren gets our names in computer. My Dad did this bit when I was a kid and I've never learned how to do it. It looks quite hard.

Summer is offically here...... NOW

This morning was the last Youth Alpha of the summer (boo hoo hoo) so that's pretty much it until September.
Not literaly 'it' of course. For one thing some of you guys are helping at Back Packers next week (Churches in Chesham working together to run a children's play scheme in case you're not in the know), The Ming' and myself are helping to head up Intents for 11 to 16 yr olds (4.30 - 6pm Tuesday to Friday next week in the big tent in Thomas Harding School field, parental permission forms needed buy freely availible for yours truly), and the Broadway Boys Brigade camp is at the end of August and I'm going along for the ride. Oh and Broadway Baptist Church has it's usual Sunday Moring Service from 10.30 - 12pm. So still quite a bit going on really.

Anyhoo, here's my point....

What better way to keep in touch with people then to sign up to blogger.com and get posting on our little ol' page right here. Or if you're already signed up, get posting now or start a new blog dedicated to your very own self.

We'll be keeping the Broadway Youth blog up to date with anything that comes to mind and there will be things appearing on Broadway Youth TV at regular intervals through out the summer.... but what about you? You must have somethign to say? Particularly if you are flying around in a private helicopter on your holidays (mention no names, heh heh). And we all want to read it, so get posting!

God bless

Ben

Last Youth Alpha Friday for a bit

Ahhhh, all the Broadway Youth stuff is coming to an end for the summer and Youth Alpha Friday nights are no different. So to end in style tonight eight of us went bowling at HotShots in Hemel Hempstead. The last time I was there was with our Church House Group. I scored 28 and came last. I was beaten by two elderly ladies.

Today I scored 128!

But wait, before you break out the Fanta, I should point out that we had those barrier things on our lane that stop your ball ging down the drain. The ones little children use. After scoring two Strikes and about a couple of spares I thought it was time I stopped trying and let one of the lads win. I used a ball with tiny holes my fingers barely fit inside, I threw balls left and right. But the darns things bounced off the sides and gave me another spare and some 9's. Bah. So I beat everybody, I am the champion. But I swear I take absolutely no pleasure in it what so ever.
To give things a bit of a twist we had some blue mini fairy lights or 'Strike Lights'. Everybody who got a strike had to wear them until the next strike was scored.
Our proud Strike Light sporters were:

Mahbenja
Charlotte
Sarah
and
Lauren

Yay us. The award for best Strike Light / outfit combination goes to Lauren for wearing them like a choker and not looking out of place.

Post your own happy bowling memories here everybody.

See a little girl intimidate some grown men

Well, don't literally beat kids. That would be wrong. Find something to beat them at if you must, like Badmington. But do watch this video of a little girl making some adults feel very uncomfortable in Wall Street, the financial capital of American.

See ya’s Free* Café

So there you have it, Free* Café.

Today we had the last one for ooh, a good six weeks at least. If you went today post a review or something here otherwise it’s just me polluting the internet with my own one sided version of history, which is as follows:

The coolest part of today was the Chesham Park guys. They all had different activities today, some of them weren’t even in the school building and finished at different times. So most of the CPCC people who came were there to specially honour us with there presence and not just because they happened to be passing. And they were in their own clothes so everything felt a bit more relaxed. We had most of the usual Thomas Harding crowd too. Lizi Ingle (hey Mingle, should that be Lingle?) went to a load of effort to put together end of term “goodie bags” and we had enough for everybody who came. It was a great way to mark the end of the term.

What else was cool? Oh yeah, Rupert made a swell video about his trip to Africa (look out for it on Broadway Youth TV very soon). One scene of significance featured him poking a cow pat with a stick. This didn’t have any narrative purpose, but I feel it added a certain flavour!
Rupert’s video very nearly didn’t happen today. The DVD copy we had wouldn’t work properly so he and Gideon ( St Mary’s Church Warden and all round geez) rushed off and came back with a working copy literally in the nick of time. Everybody say “Phew”.

What else? Oh yeah, Ian getting very excited about his new Sponge Bob Square Pants beach towel. He waved it around like a flag and did several celebratory dances.
Downside of the day: Everybody moaned that the new pool balls are smaller then the old ones. I keep telling ya, they are just a bit further away.

Next week: Intents! 4,30 – 6pm at Thomas Harding School field, in the big tent. I foresee it shall be quite massive.

Benjamin out.

This time last week

A week ago right about now I was at a training day in Cambridge, learning about learning. Learning Styles that is. It turns out I'm an Active learner.... no big surprizes there.

Anyways, after the seminar I said my good byes to the people I met, I went to the loo and.... the lights went out and I heard the front door locking. I washed my hands in the dark and thought about the prospect of being in this building for the rest of the evening. Why do I never keep my mobile charged?!! I got out of the loo and managed to unlock the door from the inside....score! Then the burglar alarm went off and the tutour ran back from her car to turn it off. Oops.

Not much of a story I know, but I enjoyed thinking I might have to tell people I spent a night locked away because I went to the loo at the wrong time. I'm sure there is a valuable life lesson there.

Kung Spoon at Google Video

Click here to see a short video about Kung Fu and spoons. It was made by the little brother of one of my best friends at a Christian Youth camp called Westbrook in the Isle of Wight. I used to go there every year when I was a teenager and I felt quite nostalgic seeing the place again. But you should watch it coz it's funny and was all shot on a digital camera. Kids today, huh.

Jango fretting over at Broadway Youth TV

This week we added a couple of old and decidedly dodgy videos to our youtube page. I have a certain affection for them especially Jango coz I made it for my second ever SMKC lesson ( after the first one was a bit boring ). But boy oh boy, they really are cheap and cheerful. I have since learned how to focus the camera.

Jango’s Frets sees everybody’s second favourite bounty hunter getting wiggled a lot by a giant hand.

Fun Fact: This video is supposed to take the mick out of that patronising style children’s presenters some times have in shows for very young viewers. The boys in my SMKC (Sunday Morning Kids Church) group all shouted “This is soooooo babyish!” when we watched it. Oops.

The 12 Spies is I think quiet a sad story. Leave your comments here to tell us what you think.

Fun Fact: Helen was sat on the lounge floor with Ben & Claire Cornell (King’s Church Amersham) playing a board game while I made this video.

Better late then never!

Hello it’s been a busy week. I’ve pretty much forgotten what my wife looks like, or that I have one. A wife that is. But I did this time last week so she must be around here some where. If I hang around by the TV when Celebrity Love Island is on she’s bound to turn up.

High lights from the last week:
F.B.I. (Free By Invitation, a fortnightly youth group) was a bunch of fun. We sat around and ate tortilla chips and made an MP3 of ourselves chit chatting. This was a lot more interesting then it probably sounds. Mr Random back me up on this please!
Chesham Park Solid Rock and Christian Union groups came to an end for the summer this week, it’s going to be weird eating lunch by myself on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the next six weeks. On Monday we had the Christian Union BBQ at Mrs Wright's. It rained the whole time but it I think we all had a great time. We amused ourselves for ages hiding a small key in one room and laughing at the others in the group as they looked for it.
I finished the last book in the Silent Planet trilogy, then yesterday I heard a guy talking about it on Radio 4. Only he was saying a complete load of guff about C.S. Lewis making space travel a sin in his books…. What amused me is that in the books Ransom ( the hero ) loves being in space and says how he couldn’t believe that he expected it to be an empty void. He calls it “deep heaven” for goodness sake! It makes me think though, when I hear stuff in the media that I know a little about so I know what they are telling me is rubbish. Well, what about the stuff I don’t know anything about…. Do they get that wrong too?

Right….that’s enough chit chat. Time to post some photos from Out There two weeks ago.

Oh, and happy first week anniversary to Ben and Liz Foster. God bless you both.

Where's your reading book?!

I'm currently reading the Corrie Ten Boom trilogy! So we're both reading trilogies, Ben!

It's about an old lady, whose family courageously provided a refuge for Jews and others wanted by the Nazis during the German occupation of Holland in the 1940s. Their faith in Jesus kept them through some horrific experiences.

I normally read this book about once a year. I love it - it's so inspiring, if a little Enid Blyton in its' style! Strangely enough, my mother-in-law is also a big fan!

To read some extracts and see a cool pic of 'the hiding place' go to
this excellent website.

What was the last book you read / what are reading at the moment?

Here's a little something for the weekend: post your answers in the comments section or if you've got a lot to say, why not have a whole new posting all to yourself?

In the last two weeks I've got totally sucked in to the Silent Planet trilogy by C.S. Lewis. Yep that C.S.Lewis , the Narnia guy. The trilogy is about a bloke called Ransom. In the first one Out of The Silent Planet he gets kidnapped and taken to another planet, apparently to be sacrificed to the aliens there who want a human before they will let people from Earth mine for gold on their world. He escapes and meets another race of aliens, learns to speak their language and gradually has his mind blown by what he learns from them about the universe.

I finished the second book, Perelandra on Wednesday. In this one Ransom is sent on a mission to Venus, but he's not sure what it is. This is one of the best books I've read, it had a bit of a slow start but by the time I was half way through I felt like I was right there, involved in what was going on.

The third one is That Hideous Strength and I'm about half way through. It's very different to the others, for one thing it's set on earth in the 50's. But so far it's good.

Youth clubs around town

feel free to come to these that are open to the public, but remember your money,

here is the list of stuff that i have knolege of going on around town

Free* cafe, this is free!!, it starts about 3:30 and ends at 5:00 and is on every other wednesday at broadway baptist church
there is a range of things to do here, from playing games consoles (nintendo gamecube, x-box, and the good ol ps2), to football at the back, also there is free food here, like cakes n biscuits n drinks (orange juice, water, stuff like that) and stuff that costs stuff, like canned drinks and chocolate bars, oh and half way through there is a five minute video about the bible and stuff. so come on down to the best youth club in town

path finders, this costs 50p, starts at 6:30 and ends at 8:00 on friday nights, its at the st marys church rooms, theres a tuckshop after a short talk about the bible and stuff, at the begining, there is table games, table football, table tennis, and table pool, wait, thats just pool, ah well, every other week or so we go on a trip, so if the door is locked come down next week!

entity, a.k.a. flentity, nnt, and that club we go to every friday night (note: any of these could be the official name) this happens every friday night from 8:30 to 10:00, it costs £1.00, but the food is free, theres also air hockey, an evil electric game with the controls and the electricuting and stuff, there is also pool, table tennis, and a short talk about the bible and stuff.

there are more than likely more, either i dont have any info on them to post them, or they exist but i dont know, anyway, for now, that is all.

Han Solo and the Bible

Just look at that late 70's space rouge. What a scoundrel! Why couldn't I have been him in the sci fi character test huh? I digress. Can a book written thousdands of years ago really have anything important to say to Harriso...er, I mean Han Solo?

You'll have to click here to watch the latest edition to Broadway Youth TV in order to find out.

Superman re enacted by rabbits in 30 seconds

Watch this right now!!!!
It's only missing Otisberg. But then it is a little bitty place.

SUNDAY

And thus we complete a full working week in the life of Ya Benjamin.
I got up early today to prepare for the Sunday morning Youth Alpha group.
It’s been a pretty packed week so I didn’t get time before. I downloaded Google Earth to help with our prayer focus on North Korea this morning and had a play with that. The satellite photos of Chesham seem pretty blurry, I guess there’s not much here anybody in space is interested in. P’ah! What do they know?

This morning we are starting the idea Iain and I had last Sunday night (see the Chewing gum post from Sunday 25th June ). Every time we come together to learn about and worship Jesus we are going to pray for Christians from the Open Doors list of 50 nations where the Church faces persecution . We started this morning with the number 1 nation where Christians have it tough: North Korea.

Our study this morning was on Jesus turning a normal conversation (“can I have some water please?”) into a potentially life changing moment (“come and meet the man who told me everything I ever did!”). We talked about the people we are least likely to talk to, as a Jewish man like Jesus was pretty unlikely to start any kind of conversation with a lone woman from Samaria in that culture.
Oh, and we had cake.

Not many people at Church this morning. Malcolm and Phil (the administrator and minister and the other members of the staff team) are away on holiday so I guess they must be the main draw for a lot of people ☺

Stroof it’s hot today. Got my day off tomorrow, sweet!

SATURDAY

What for most people will be remembered as “the day England were knocked out of the International Plate of Soccer” was for me the day the OUT THERE project finally hit.

I picked up the paint, brushes and cakes that church folk left at Broadway in the morning and made my way to Little Spring School to meet with the other LOVE IN ACTION organisers and the Teacher who had arranged all the work for today. There was plenty to do….and on “the hottest day of the year” to boot. First up about seven of us lifted up a wooden playhouse and moved it to a new spot on the other side of the playground. It was too big to go through one gate and too heavy to lift over the fence. We had to carry it around the playground. It might not sound like much but this was some achievement and it needed all seven of us to strain and tough it out together. Once it was moved two parents of children at the school and Derek from The King's Church Chesham got to stripping off the old felt roof and replacing it. They looked pretty manly I can tell ya!

Some of the LOVE IN ACTION team got to work on sanding down and painting chalk boards and targets for the nursery children to use in the playground. Carl from Emmanuel painted a pretty swish dolphin (he got a handsome shade of grey going from some old emulsion remnants) whilst Natasha worked with Imi from Emmanuel on painting some shapes and a rather fed up looking thundercloud. Some how I always imagined it would be fun to be a thundercloud, shows how little I know about precipitation. One of the boards is the silhouette of a goalkeeper and Sarah from Emmanuel draw around my hands to finish it off. That’s right folks, my very own hands! Crooked little fingers and everything! I hope it doesn’t scare any of the more fragile kinder.

Most of the rest of the LOVE IN ACTION team worked on digging two vegetable patches in the middle of a lawn. I can’t properly explain quite how difficult this was. Janet and Carolyn (representing Broadway Baptist Church AND the nursery where they work, go girls!) had a tough time marking out the spaces with some attractive peach coloured wool (as soon as wool was mentioned I knew it would be a peachy tone. Scary huh!). The bone-dry ground and the over enthusiastic team members made it a real challenge to keep the markers in place. The ground was dry to dig so we had to recruit a team to go to and fro from the grass to the sinks buckets in hand. We recycled the unwanted grass my making a turf bench for the children to sit on. It was hard going and we did really well to get it finished in time.

It was an excellent day. It was great to see the LOVE IN ACTION guys in their red T shirts with the “Jesus working for you” cross logo working along side school staff, parents and children. I would like to give special blog salute to a man called Stuart who brought a box full of ice, soft drinks and bottles of water. You sir are a true gent!

In the evening Lydia, Natasha and me joined the Emmanuel mob to go down to the BBQ at Latimer Park together. They introduced us to some truly odd but fascinating and difficult ways to entertain yourself with nothing but a table and some empty plastic cups. Oh and Imi put hot dog sausages in her friend’s handbag. I mention as it outranks the time I spat in a sleeping Henry Deverux’s ear as the nastiest thing I’ve ever seen one friend do to another. I should point out that I was 18 and at a sleep over at the time and wanted to see what he was like when he got cross.

That's Henry when he's awake incase you were wondering.

On the way home Lydia sang some very strange songs in French with lyrics that when translated included the following:
Walking 1 kilometre hurts my feet, Walking 2 kilometres hurts my feet, Walking 3 , etc etc
Planting cabbages with my ear, Planting cabbages with my elbows
My head hurts, I better go to the GP’s surgery.
They confused me so much that I’m starting to wonder if French isn’t a language that is made up on the spot.

Hope you had a good Saturday

Ben

FRIDAY

Another day in the continuing saga of “WHAT DOES YA BENJAMIN DO?”
Don’t worry folks, I’m not going to blog my every waking moment till history runs dry…. This is just to give Broadway Youth folks a sneaky peeky into what does on when your not looking. And believe me folks, this information is vital! Only last night somebody asked me if I have another job because ‘Youth Pastor’ like a hobby….
(I don’t and it’s not btw ☺).
On Friday morning I woke up with a dead tight dead line: get the Little Spring Radio project finished and get to the school by 1.50pm. I stayed at home to avoid any churchey interruptions, started at 8.30am and got it finished by 12.30. YESSSSS!!!!!
You would not believe how much work can go into 12 minutes of radio.

In the afternoon I played the finished program to the year 6 class at Little Spring, we evaluated their work together and I invited those who are going up to Chesham Park in September to come to Solid Rock.

Spent the rest of the afternoon emailing and making phone calls about this and that.
I picked up Lydia, Iain and Johny in the evening and we went to the OUT THERE launch concert.
The Soul Survivor Watford bandplayed and Nick from Kings Church Amersham did a talk about fat people getting stabbed, it’s all in the Bible I promise.
It was Johny’s first gig with a live band and he rocked out appropriately.
Got home at 10.30pm and did some more emailing of last minute stuff for OUT THERE tomorrow. See you at Little Spring School 9.30 – 2.30!
