Don't forget - Friday night is Pizza & DVD night at Youth Alpha. Bring along a DVD of your choice & something to eat (prefferably pizza) at the usual time of 7.30pm. Pick up time is at 10pm ( a bit later this week to make sure we have time to watch all of the film).
On Sunday morning at Youth Alpha we came up with a list of rules that we all felt we could agree to. Copies will be given out to everybody who is part of the group and all parents.
Here they are so that we can quickly link back to them when we need to:
At Youth Alpha we
1. Respect each other
2. Concentrate during group activities
3. Avoid Tangents
4. Do what the leaders ask us to do
5. Act in a responsible and mature way
Youth Alpha is a:
Swearing free zone
Bully free zone
And here's why each rule is important to us:
1. Because we all want to be respected and we all want to be listened to when we have something important to say. 2. We recognise that we will ‘get out’ as much as we are prepared to ‘put in’ to group activities. 3. We all go off on one sometimes, but we know that the whole group benefits when we stay focused. 4. The leaders are responsible for our safety. Following instructions is the best way for everyone to have fun in a safe environment. 5. We all want to enjoy ourselves. Behaving responsibly is the best way to ensure the whole group will have fun.
A swearing free zone: because God made our tongues for better things then that.
A bully free zone: because the Bible tells us to treat each other with love.
Here's what's up with Broadway Youth this week (or "stuff for young people at Broadway Baptist church in Chesham for those not in the know).
F.B.I. Wednesday 3.30 - 5pm - that's right, no Free* Cafe' this week (yeah I know, not our normal routine but we've had to change it this month, sorry)
Solid Rock, Thursday lunch time in the Old Drama studio at Chesham Park school A great place to spend your lunch time, have a laugh and look at what the bible says.
Youth Alpha, Friday 7.30 - 10pm, for school years 7 to 11. Bring a DVD and some pizza, so we can , errr, vote on which one to watch and cook up and eat the other one. That's right, we're spending the evening starring at frozen food and chewing on shiny silver discs! Hmmm, was that to obvious?
Youth Alpha, Sunday 10.30 - 12pm (during the morning service) This week we're looking at how God chooses a leader, from one of my favourite bible books: 1 Samuel.
All events are at Broadway Baptist Church unless otherwise stated.
Stroof but it was windy yestersay! Just in Chesham one of the schools has a power outage and is closed today and another one had a roof blow off one of the building. Walking to work this morning I came across loads of fallen branches and busted up fences, it's a bit scarry to see the town looking so beaten up. At our house the outside cupboard door blew off it's hinges, which was admittidly less dramatic then these pictures half inched off the BBC news website:
Don't forget:
Youth Alpha is on tonight, 7.30 - 9.30pm at Broadway Baptist Church
And the Novimost Bosnia night on Sunday, 6.30 - 9.30 at Broadway. It sounds like a lot of fun so get your team together (scroll downto the 'This Week' post for details of this).
Here's the latest video from Broadway Youth TV. It's the 6th instalment in our video run down of the 10 Commendments, God's top 10 rules for enjoying the fullest possible life. This one is a doooozy - honour your parents. Nope, not "obey", HONOUR. i.e. to relate to them and to live in such a way that does honour to Ma' and Pa'. Hands up who finds that easy all the time?
Where did all the hands go?
Enjoy the video and leave a comment to let us know what you think, either here or on our youtube page.
Over the next couple of weeks we're going to host some flash games. Have a go, see what you think and let us know. This week we're starting with Star Fighter, a rehash of a game I used to get horribly addicted to on my Dad's commodore during the mid 80's. Leave a comment if you get an impressive score.
A fair few musicans and creative types have been through the Broadway Youth doors over the years. Here's a little round up of the latest that some of them are up to:
You should already know that Simon Dwight (Youth Alpha Sunday leader and star of last October's All-nighter DVD) fronts the Park Race. Have a looksie at their latest youtube upload below, it's a lovely slice of indie/alternative pop gold. If you like guitar music you're in for a treat:
They have some live dates coming up, visit their Myspace page for details and to listen to more of their songs.
Rob Blakeney's voice will be familiar to anyone who's has visited Free* Cafe' as he is one third of University of the King, whose last two albums we play on a virtually constant loop. Rob has launched a new Myspace profile for his expirimental solo project Grey Beard. Click here to have a look for yourself. The page features a couple of songs you can listen which sound quiet different from his last solo album 'Arctic Village Beaver'. Be sure to add it to your friends list and keep watching for updates. To my mind a leaky radiator would be worth a listen if it was produced by the Zang lot, such is their combined creative genius and catchey pop sensibility. Not that Grey Beard sounds like a leaky radiator.....next!
Staying in the world of Hip Hop and University of the King solo projects, Dave Blower has a new album coming out later this year. If you heard Dave's previous solo album you'll know why this is a big deal. The album, 'It's raining glass and tears' was an edgey, brooding and angry beast of a record, full of uncomfortable and uncomprimising insights into life in Britian since the Romans nicked off. Click here to visit his Myspace profile or here to have a goggle at his website. If the'manifesto' and 'visions' pages on the site are anything to go by then the new album will take things even further. You'll also notice that Dave has changed the name of his solo out put from 'Beloved' to 'Benjamin Blower', it's always nice to see another Son of the Right Hand!
And now ladies and gentlemen, if you like your music with a bit more shouting and some proper scarry faces then why not go crazy for Rob and Luke Lehane in:
The boys are working on an album for this year, a live set, an acoustic live set, stroof Rob is even availible for guitar tuition so I hear. Click here to visit their Myspace profile to find out more and see more photos of them in make up. Nice!

TGIF - Friday lunch time at Chesham High school, room H6. Any pupils or staff are welcome. This week they are watching a Nooma DVD, which are well worth your time. Click here to visit their myspace group and find out more about them.

Sunday Night Special!!! 6.30 - 9pm there is a cool quiz night hosted by Novimost international, a fantastic charity based in Chesham that works in Bosnia. It's totally free to come so get your family to come along or get a team of your mates together to take part. Please contact the church to let us knwo you are coming.
Hard to believe, but there are actually people in this world who didn’t make it to the Youth Alpha games night at Broadway Baptist Church on Friday night. So for all 6.5 billion of you, here are some of the high lights.
“Poodley Doodley!” It’s this years “budge fudge” (maybe) and Jonny’s award winning caption for this picture:
It was part of ‘Ben’s Brilliant captions game’, in which contestations had to get inside my head and write amusing captions in what they deemed to my own personal style AND they had to make me laugh. The idea was ripped off from the best board game off all time Carrots Canny Captions. No really, best board game ever, ask around.
(budge fudge is a slang term meaning 'move over' that was created by members of Youth Alpha quite by accident. Look out for it in the Oxford English Dictionary sometime soon-ish).
Meet Mr Duck Tape & His Doggy Chum! Just look at these two beauties, they should have there own TV show and successful toy franchise:
They were created during the classic game ‘duck tape modelling’, which I stole from this website which has loads of game ideas for youth groups.
To round the evening off we scoffed a lot of food. Lauren and I made a ‘lucky chair’ by putting a blue M&M in the little Bible holder bit at the back.
The plan was that somebody would sit there for church on Sunday morning and have a lovely little chocolate surprise. I checked at the end of this morning’s service and here’s what I found:
So the chair is officially still ‘lucky’.
This morning (Sunday) at Youth Alpha we looked at obedience, specifically, how one generation of the Israelites disobeyed God but how their children grew up to obey Him. On a similair theme, check out this old chestnut from Broadway Youth TV. Most of the Youth Alpha mob were in my SMKC (Sunday School) group when I made this, cool huh.
That’s all for now. Let’s end on a high note with some more action from Mr Duck Tape. Oh boy!
It's January so everything is kicking off again. Youth Alpha is back on Sunday 7th Free* Cafe' is back on Wednesday 10th Youth Alpha Fridays are back on Friday 12th and F.B.I. is back on the 17th
The local school Christian Union should be starting back in the next week or so, look out for details at school.
Did you have a go at the Bible/Brain training reading challenge over the holidays? I've been reading Leviticus and it's been a real eye opener. Cheerio
